From a large family (he had four brothers and sisters); was brought up by his grandfather — master-переплетчиком. He studied in cheder (up to 1902/1903). was among the founders of the first Jewish literary-художественного magazine "Makhmadim" (in French and Yiddish), which also collaborated Х. Сутин, И. М. Чайков and others.

In 1921 he participated in the exhibition of Russian art in London gallery "Whitechapel".
