GURVICH Eleonora Samoylovna

Eleonora Gurvich studied under the guidance of K. F. Bogaevsky in Feodosia (1919–1922). From 1922 till 1930 she studied in the Higher State Artistic and Technical Workshops (VKhUTEMAS) — the Higher Art Technical Institute (VKhUTEIN) in Moscow. Her teachers were N. I. Piskarev and F. A. Favorsky. In 1930 she completed her graduating work — illustrations to the book Reggie by E. S. Byvalov (xylography).

Gurvich lived in Moscow. She was married to A. E. Mandelstam (poet O. E. Mandelstam’s brother).  She was engaged in easel, book and industrial graphic art (trademarks).

Eleonora Gurvich designed many children’s books for the State Publishing House (Gosizdat), the State Publishing House for Agricultural Literature (Selkhozgiz) and others. She created illustrations to the books Children by S. A. Auslender (1925), Saida en Adinda by Multatuli (E. D. Dekker), a series of books on agriculture (1925–1931), History of library science in Russia by V. E. Vasilchenko (1948). Gurvich also drew illustrations for the Vsemirnaya Illustration magazine (“World Illustration”, 1923), the newspaper Sputnik (“Guide”; World exhibition in Brussels, 1958).

Gurvich painted portraits, landscapes and still-lifes. She was engaged in monotype and worked in tempera, pastel, watercolour. In 1962 she created a series of easel monotypes Gurzuf. She created a series of graphic works: Autumn leaves (1965, monotype), The window (1966, tempera), Flowering almond (1967, tempera), Bouquet (1967, monotype), Olya (1963, monotype), Professor (1965, monotype), Girl in pink (1966, monotype).

Eleonora Gurvich was a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR. Since 1959 she took part in many exhibitions. Her works were exposed at the 7th Exhibition of book graphic art in Moscow, the Art exhibition of Moscow artists (1963, 1966), the Exhibition of Moscow women artists (1969) and others.

Works by Eleonora Gurvich are in many regional museum collections.
