Painter, draftsman

the Son of a merchant, a Swede by birth, a native of East Prussia. Brother of Karl Karlovich Hertz — art critic, founder of the Department of theory and history of art at Moscow University. Studied in MUZHVZ (1844-1856) in the class of landscape painting in К. И. Рабуса. He was awarded a commendable sheets from the Council of the Moscow art society (1847, 1848, 1849). In 1851 for the painting "View in Livonia in the vicinity of Freudenberg" received from the IAH title neklassnogo (free) artist.

he Lived in Moscow. A landscape painter. In 1859 — 1860-х worked a lot in vicinities of Moscow; repeatedly visited the Crimea. In 1860-х made a trip to Palestine and mount Athos, where he completed an album of watercolors. Author of painting works: "the Ruins of Brunnenburg on the Rhine", "View of the Novodevichy convent in Moscow", "Moscow courtyard with the Church in the evening light, Church in the vicinity of Moscow" (watercolor) and others. He was engaged in lithography; executed several landscapes for the "Album of species and scenes from Russian life. Autographs of Moscow artists" (Moscow, 1867).

From 1845 — participated in exhibitions. Exhibited at the exhibitions of MUZHVZ (1845-1860, with interruptions), the Imperial Academy of arts (1849, 1851). A member and Exhibitor of mulch (1860-1870), the Secretary of the company.

a Close friend А. К. Саврасова married to his sister Sophia Karlovna.

Work is represented in several Museum collections, among them — of the State Tretyakov gallery, Museum В. А. Тропинина and Moscow artists of his time, the Pushkin Museum im. А. С. Пушкина.
